What is microbial protein?

Microbial protein is one of the most sustainable protein sources in the world. It contains all the essential amino acids that dogs need – including glutamic acid, which plays an important role in nutrition. The protein is easily digestible and possesses high bioavailability. The amino acid profile of the protein obtained by fermentation from Methylococcus capsulatus (Bath) is exceptional: it contains all the essential amino acids that dogs need for a balanced diet. Additionally, it is characterised by high digestibility and bioavailability – meaning that the nutrients can be optimally absorbed by the organism.

A recent study by Oba et al. (2023) confirms these properties. In a comparative study, the standardised amino acid digestibility of microbial protein (FeedKind) was compared with classic protein sources like chicken meal, corn gluten, pea protein, and insect protein. The results show: microbial protein consistently shows high digestibility (>85%), especially for lysine (92%) and tryptophan (97%).
